Building Reliability Into a Manufacturing Upgrade

A manufacturing upgrade changes more than the equipment on the production line. It can introduce new failure modes, maintenance tasks, spares requirements and demands on the people who will operate and maintain it.

Considering reliability during the project gives teams time to understand those needs before the equipment is handed over.

  1. Define how the equipment must perform. Consider the operating duty and the effect of a failure on production.
  2. Review likely failure modes. Identify what could go wrong and how those failures might be detected or managed.
  3. Prepare for handover. Make sure maintenance tasks, information and responsibilities are clear to the receiving team.
Plan for Operation, Not Just Installation

Installation and commissioning are important milestones, but they aren’t the end of the reliability work. The maintenance team needs a practical plan that reflects how the equipment will operate once production begins.

“A successful handover gives the site a way to maintain the equipment, not just a way to start it.”

PSW supports organisations in bringing maintenance and reliability thinking into asset changes and upgrades, helping the people responsible for ongoing performance prepare for what comes next.
